If you live in Central Ohio and are looking for something fun to do, one of the area’s best hidden gems is the Franklin Park Conservatory. This stunning botanical garden and conservatory, located just east of downtown Columbus at the corner of East Broad Street and Nelson Road, spans 93 acres and contains more than 400 plant species. Founded in 1895, Franklin Park Conservatory has grown into one of the city’s top attractions. Its beautiful glasshouse structures, lush gardens, and seasonal exhibitions draw visitors of all ages.
Since 1994, the conservatory has hosted its popular Blooms and Butterflies exhibition. Thousands of tropical butterflies fill the Pacific Island Water Garden each year, creating a breathtaking and educational experience for visitors. Despite its central location in the Olde Towne East neighborhood, many Columbus residents are only vaguely aware of the conservatory. I live just a short distance away and have visited both the conservatory and the surrounding Franklin Park many times. The conservatory is open every day of the year except Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day, with hours from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
On the first Sunday of every month, “Community Day” welcomes residents of Franklin County and the city of Columbus to enjoy free admission with a valid ID.
In my opinion, this experience would be worth twice the price—especially when you factor in the free parking and the option to bring your own packed lunch. For those on a budget, Community Day makes this one of the best low-cost outings in Columbus.
Visitors can explore the conservatory at their own pace or join a guided tour led by a knowledgeable staff member. Groups of 15 or more receive a discounted rate of $16 per person, but tours must be scheduled at least two business days in advance.
