Ohio State Fair

Something for everyone in late summer at the Ohio State Fair

Every year from late July through early August, nearly one million guests attend the Ohio State Fair. The fair takes place at the Ohio Expo Center and State Fairgrounds, located between 17th and 11th Avenues just off Interstate 71 in Columbus.

The first Ohio State Fair was a three-day event held in Cincinnati in 1850. Due to the difficulty of traveling across Ohio at the time, the fair was soon moved to Columbus in hopes of attracting more visitors. Although it was always called the “state fair,” in the beginning most of the exhibitors lived near the fair itself.

When the fair first moved to Columbus, it was held at Franklin Park until 1885. In 1886, it moved to its current location at the Ohio Expo Center and State Fairgrounds.

Today, the Ohio State Fair runs for 17 days. A 2011 economic impact study estimated that the fair contributes nearly $68.5 million to Ohio’s economy each year.

Admission and Hours

An admission ticket costs $8, or you can purchase a three-day pass for $20. Discounted pricing is available for youth ages 6–12 and seniors. Admission is free for veterans, military members, first responders, and children under five. Parking is available for $10.

The fair is open daily from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM.

The Famous Butter Cow

Dating back to 1903, one of the fair’s most enduring traditions is the beloved butter cow sculpture. This exhibit is created by The Ohio State University in partnership with the Dairy Processors of Ohio. While early butter sculptures featured a variety of subjects, since 1925 the life-size cow and calf have become a permanent tradition. Each year, a new butter cow and calf are displayed alongside a “mystery sculpture” that reflects cultural trends.

Free Live Music

On select days, the All-Ohio State Fair Band and Youth Choir perform free concerts. In addition, tribute and cover bands take the stage at the Celeste Center throughout the fair, also free of charge.

Events and Competitions

Several building trade unions, including the Operative Plasterers and Cement Masons, hold competitions where apprentices showcase their talents in hands-on demonstrations. These events give visitors a chance to see skilled trades in action.

Livestock Exhibitions

Young people from fourth grade through age 19 who are members of an Ohio 4-H club or FFA chapter can exhibit livestock at the Ohio State Fair. Exhibitors compete by showing their animals, which are judged by qualified judges and awarded champions. More than 11 types of livestock are shown, including alpacas/llamas, beef cattle, goats, dairy cows, dairy goats, dogs, draft horses, poultry, rabbits, sheep, and swine.

Animals raised for meat are then auctioned off to the highest bidder. Exhibitors often court potential buyers in advance to generate interest. The highest-placing animals can sell for well above market value, as many bidders participate not only to purchase quality livestock but also to support youth programs, advertise their farms, and build goodwill within their agricultural communities.

Family-Friendly Activities

The Ohio State Fair offers plenty of family-friendly attractions, many of which involve animals. The OVMA Animal Care Center lets visitors witness live chick hatching, expectant pigs, and playful goats, lambs, and calves. There are also unique rides, including the chance to ride a large, gentle camel. A petting zoo features more than 50 species from around the world, giving children a chance to interact with animals up close. And don’t miss the competitive pig races—these lighthearted events are surprisingly action-packed and entertaining for all ages.

Food You Can Only Find at the Fair

With more than 40 specialty food vendors, the fair is a paradise for anyone who loves unique—and often indulgent—treats. From deep-fried Oreos and Snickers bars to bacon-wrapped creations, there’s something for every adventurous eater. It may not be the healthiest food, but it only comes once a year!

Rides and Entertainment

The Ohio State Fair offers a wide selection of rides for both kids and adults. Ride access is available with an all-day wristband or by purchasing individual ride tickets.

Concerts at the Celeste Center

Each year, the Celeste Center hosts a lineup of national acts for ticketed concerts. These shows require separate admission from the fair ticket.

Shopping at the Ohio State Fair

The fair also features more than 300 commercial exhibitors selling everything from kitchenware and cleaning supplies to clothing, jewelry, antiques, collectibles, and “as seen on TV” gadgets. It’s a fun way to browse and maybe even pick up something unique.
